Which Memory should I choose?
This page is broken into 3 sections.
- The blue Cheap Memory section (offers the cheapest generic memory),
- The green Aplus section (affordable guaranteed memory) and
- The grey Kingston section (premium quality guaranteed memory).
So, whats the difference and why should you care?
If you have been browsing for prices already you will have most likely noticed that memory prices may vary a lot. What appears to be the same item might be $40 on one site and $200 on another.
Many people think the difference in memory prices is related to the quality of the product, but this is only part of the picture.
There are 3 main factors in the price:
- Quality
- Compatibility
- Performance
Generic Memory Information:
The memory we offer for sale here on Cheap Memory is known as generic memory. Generic memory is cheap because it is made to a design standard, not your particular machine.
This memory is guaranteed to work, but not guaranteed compatible with your machine
. In other words, if you have a problem and the memory is not faulty, no refund!
System Specific Memory Information:
System specific memory such as the memory offered through the Aplus Memory & Kingston Memory configurator has been designed, tested and optimised for your machine.
System specific memory is guaranteed to work with your machine. If you have any kind of problem the memory can be replaced or refunded in full.
So which should memory type should you choose?
Notebooks/Laptop Memory Upgrades:
If you are looking to upgrade a brand name laptop I would advise you to go with a guaranteed compatible option as manufacturers often use non-standard memory designs to extend battery life or reduce heat. Generic Memory is usually fine for clone machines such as the Pioneer, Aldi and excel notebook varieties.
Desktop PC Upgrades:
When it comes to brand name desktop machine it is not so clear cut. A lot of brand name machines will work fine with generic memory, however, there are some exceptions. Our general rule is "if in doubt go for the System Specific".
